In the African Forest area of Brookfield Zoo they have embedded speakers hung in the trees and on the ground that run loops of bird calls. I thought that it would be interesting to actually use pitched elements along with it. Animals probably don't perceive sound patterns as music as we do, but over time they would perceive it as a part of the acoustic ecology, even if artificial.
In eschewing mass media content, sound art proposes a more radical exploration of the formal conditions of the medium itself. Against the anesthetic assault of daily life, it reclaims a basic function of art: the affirmation and extension of pure sensation.--Christoph Cox
In David Stubbs' book "Fear of Music", he parses the distinction between music and "sound art", and the challenges in staging quiet performances in galleries with the bleed in of extraneous noises: "The ambient sounds of parties of schoolchildren charging up and down the Corridor, the hum of central heating systems or the sharp patter of stiletto heels on wooden floorboards, are all potential sources of disruption."
This is the thing to leave in!
