Jaume Plensa's sound sculpture for the lobby of the Burj Khalifa is music for 196 places, "cymbalized" by cymbals, performing in one place. Unfortunately this a terrible video of it. Why mask the sound of the piece with stock music?
A possible place music, the Zadar Sea Organ in Crotia. The tonal center appears to an E minor pentatonic scale. A new sound blocking technology has the opposite of effect of the figure/ground relationship of sound in the environment. You have sounds close to you and at various distances, as well as imagined sounds. The Sonos device blocks ambient sound, whereas Music For Places uses the background, especially when there are continuous or frequent sounds in the environment that serve as the ground. |
